Putera MIC, a brainchild of Dato’ Seri Utama Dr S. Samy Vellu, was founded in 2007. It is a wing under the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) targeted at recruiting Indian youths, mostly professionals, graduates and entrepreneurs, aged between 18 to 35. The former party President’s vision for Putera MIC was for it to act as a professional movement gathering Indian youths whom were seen to shy away from political organizations, directly proving critics were wrong to conclude that Indian youths who were graduates and those from the professional sector were moving away from any involvement with the MIC. Putera MIC is to provide an avenue for these capable individuals to contribute to our society at large, and the Indian community in particular. Primary focus of the movement was in the areas of education, entrepreneurship and information technology. The movement was spearheaded by YB Dato P Kamalanathan at its inception, when he was appointed by the former President as the National Coordinator. Being the first coordinator, YB Dato P Kamalanathan and his dedicated team was proactive in identifying groups of potential student leaders and professional youths who were successful in their respective organization to be a part of the core group to startup the movement and to make an impact in line with the visions set by the former President on the wing and the party nationwide. In 2008, just within a year from its humble beginning, Putera MIC was a brand well known to student from almost every public university and Indian youths in Malaysia. The many interactive sessions and ‘out-of-the-box’ programs and events organized by the movement managed to garner good support from Indian professional youths nationwide as they slowly by surely gained trust and volunteered to become a member of the movement.
After the 13th General Election in 2013, YB Dato P Kamalanathan made way for a new leadership and the former President then, YB Datuk Seri G Palanivel appointed YB Raven Kumar Datuk Krishnasamy as the movement’s new coordinator. This saw a new wake for Putera MIC’s relevance to the party when two Putera MIC representatives, YB Dato P Kamalanathan and YB Raven Kumar Datuk Krishnasamy won the parliamentary and state assembly seats allocated to them respectively. This win was not only the success of the party but was also a well-needed boost for the wing. This change also brought many new perspectives for the movement. One in particular was how the movement should and can strengthen itself to play a vital role in the decision-making processes of the party. YB Raven Kumar Datuk Krishnasamy and his dedicated team focused in strengthening the movement while continuing with Putera MIC’s unique strength in the social media.
The re-election of the party in October 2015 saw Putera MIC conduct its historic first elections for the wing and the former National Secretary, Uvaraja Maniam was elected into office as the first ever National Chief of the wing. Under the credible leadership of the party President, Datuk Seri Dr S Subramaniam, who realizes the importance of Putera MIC and the positive impact the wing could bring to the party, Putera MIC is seen leading the way in student engagement. Being its sole mission for the wing, Putera MIC under the leadership of the focused Uvaraja Maniam has been on a mission to continuously engage with Indian students in almost every higher education institutions in the country. This continuous effort had eventually made Putera MIC as the students best friend and many in the process are volunteering in the many youth empowerment programs organized by the wing.
Putera MIC’s vision today is nothing short but to steer our youths towards positivity!
